Arthritis

Arthritis may be referred to as osteoarthritis, arthrosis or degenerative joint disease - or even as 'wear and tear'! It is a slow process that develops over many years and causes degeneration of the joints which can lead to pain and inflammation.

Sometimes there may be widespread osteoarthritis with little pain, but sometimes joints with osteoarthritis can be very sore and stiff. Symptoms may vary with bad spells occurring over a few weeks, or even months, followed by much better periods.

To help sore joints:

  • Try to stay as mobile as possible
  • Simple pain-killers may help
  • Heat is often soothing and will help gain a little movement
  • Exercises will help to improve the strength of the muscles that support the joint and maintain their mobility

Physiotherapists can help by using pain-relieving techniques and designing specialist exercise programmes to your specific needs.
