Back and Neck Pain

Back and neck pain are rarely serious and you can do a lot to help yourself. Most people make a quick recovery.

If you are suffering from neck or back pain follow these simple steps to help recovery:

  • Take pain-killers
  • Stay as active as possible
  • Use heat or ice

Bed rest is not advised - your back needs movement!

Ask for help if you don't get back to normal activities within a few days. Physiotherapy can often help recovery, for example, through massage, manual therapy, exercise programmes or acupuncture.

If you have any serious symptoms such as headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, disturbed vision, nausea, confusion, bladder or bowel problems, pins and needles or balance problems you should seek help either from your GP, A&E department or your physiotherapist.

Whiplash

If you have been involved in a car accident you may experience neck or back pain as a result of the sudden impact (whiplash). These injuries can be very painful and may take a few days to come on. You will recover but it usually takes a few days, or even weeks.

Follow the advice above to help aid recovery

NB: Collars are not a good idea and may delay recovery because they restrict normal movement.

If you experience any serious symptoms, such as those above, seek advise from your GP
