Top tips for recent injuries

These injuries are also known as acute injuries. Many can be self-treated while others may need advice and treatment.

The damage done can be to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves, connective tissue or bone. The injured site will feel painful and hot, with swelling and bruising.

Self treatment includes PRICE:

  • Protection
  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation

In the first 48 hours after an injury this is the method of treatment for a soft tissue injury.

If there is a lot of swelling and extreme tenderness over the bone an X-ray may be needed and medical help should be sought.

Over the next few days the pain should ease and the swelling reduce. The area becomes easier to use and you can gradually start to regain your normal movement.

Physiotherapy treatment can help you return to normal activities and functions more quickly.
